Richard Carter died from unspecified causes on 20th January, 1915, while serving with the Royal Field Artillery in France. It is not known if he died from wounds or from illness, both of which took their toll of the men on the Western Front. 

44 Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery went to France in September, 1914 as part of 2nd Division and spent the rest of the war on the Western Front. In January, 1915. 2nd Division were holding the line around Festubert.
